Many Paths to Success
We cultivate citizenship; leadership is a by-product. We focus exclusively on training — in a nautical context — to refine sea scouts into good citizens. We expect good citizens make the best leaders.
No one is expected to be perfect the first time -- or the third -- so we have a lot of opportunities to refine your skills. Our goal is to allow those that what to, room to prove themselves and to advance to lead us as Boatswain.
Leadership is progressive. Scouts start by following, then gaining responsibility for themselves, tasks, others, and then the unit. Here is the organization chart for a Sea Scout Ship:
- Boatswain's Mate (Administration)
- Boatswain's Mate (Program)
- Purser (Funding)
- Crew Leader Specialist (Activities)
- Skipper's Mate (Administration)
- Skipper's Mate (Program)
- Treasurer (Funding)
- Consultant(s) (Activities)

The more responsibility the Scoutmaster gives his patrol leaders, the more they will respond.
